Mayor of Merton and Gold Medalist Olympian to support tennis programme at Dundonald Rec.

L1010991This Saturday, 22nd June, from 12.00 noon Dundonald Rec Tennis Club (DRTC) is officially launching its Olympic Legacy Programme (OLP). This programme is already benefiting more than 200 people of all ages and abilities.

DRTC is particularly keen to introduce young children to tennis. The club is presently working with local schools offering free after-school Olympic Legacy sessions.

Mrs Tina Dunking, Secretary of the Club said:

“The response from local parents to our Olympic programme has been overwhelming. We’re now aiming to offer coaching during school hours to aid local schools to improve their sport curriculum.”

“We also would like parents to play tennis when their children are at school, helping to improve the health and well-being of the family as a whole”

The Olympic Legacy programme has been welcomed by the Mayor of Merton who has kindly agreed to formally launch the programme on 22 June.

We are also thrilled and proud to receive the support of a local Gold Medalist from the 2012 London Games. Miss Sophie Hosking MBE said:

“I am fully behind the Olympic Legacy programme. Getting more kids involved in sport and being active is something I feel very passionately about. Staying fit, healthy and active is important for kids of all ages and it is great to see my local borough recognising this.”
Dundonald Rec Tennis Club’s efforts to encourage the playing of tennis by all ages and abilities has been hailed as “laudable” by the All England Tennis Club who has supported the club initiative with a generous donation of equipment.

Dr Ernesto Pinto, Chairman of the Club said:

“We are delighted by the terrific support from all sectors of the community; children and parents, sportsmen and women, Councillors, local schools, everyone is loving the opportunity to have a go at playing this great game.

We invite everyone to join our fun day filled with tennis in Dundonald Rec. This will be a great tennis season opener, with the Wimbledon Championships beginning two days later.

Cardio-tennis

Cardio Tennis is a series of tennis based drills and activities played to up-tempo music on a tennis court. It does not require tennis skills, but is all about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories and having fun. Whether the ball goes in or out is irrelevant as the main purpose is to get fit.
